Prompts ship fast. Taste, judgment, and accountability still cost something. Here’s where the gap lives.
There’s a version of AI panic that makes no sense once you examine it. The argument goes: AI can build websites, therefore web designers are obsolete. But this only holds if you believe web design is primarily about producing files.
What AI cannot do is tell you that the client’s hero copy is speaking to the wrong audience. It cannot notice that the pricing page creates anxiety instead of clarity. It cannot push back when a client wants to add five more sections to an already-overloaded homepage. Judgment isn’t a feature. It’s the product.
The real opportunity is for designers who understand both the technical depth AI enables and the strategic thinking it can’t replace. You can now build faster, prototype more, test more — and then apply the judgment that decides which direction was right. The gap between a prompt and a high-converting page is still enormous. That gap is your business.
The studios that will struggle are the ones doing generic work that AI genuinely can replicate. The ones that will thrive are building a body of work and a reputation that makes ‘just use AI’ feel like a downgrade.
